The Doctorate Board (Collegio dei Docenti) has the legal power to confer the doctorate, the highest academic distinction.
This distinction is granted to those who have proved themselves capable of the independent pursuit of scholarship.
Proof of such capability is to be provided by the candidate, by carrying out research leading to a doctorate thesis.

The aim of this Doctorate is to support, create and maintain the quality of scholarship in doctorate research and thesis.
The main outlines of the procedure are sketched below.

Preliminary course of study

In order to gain to the process leading toward a doctorate, as a rule the legal minimum educational requirement must be satisfied.
This means having successfully completed an education in dentistry: in other words, an european 'doctoraal' degree or an equivalent degree can serve as a starting point for attaining the doctorate.

If a candidate has a foreign education, it must first be ascertained whether the degree attained is sufficient to gain access to a doctorate.
If this is the case, the person concerned can be granted exemption from the legal italian educational requirement.

Promoter (doctorate-thesis supervisor)

These trainee research assistants might be appointed y the Doctorate Board specifically for that thesis (or several thesis).
Because a plan is drawn up at the beginning of the appointment in which supervision of the supervisor is also established, it is usually known at an early stage who in due course will act as promoter.
The promoter(s) re found out and selected among well-recognised experts of the topic of each thesis.

It is possible that two professors will act as promoter; they will agree upon an allocation of tasks and each of them will be responsible for the thesis as a whole.
In the case that a professor of a foreign university will act as promoter it is obliged to add a promoter who is appointed to an italian university.

A promoter may, if he/she wishes, have one or more co-promoters to assist him/her. The co-promoter works under the responsibility of the promoter.

Admission as a candidate for the doctorate

The admission to the Doctorate is opened every years through an public exam, regulated by italian laws and Siena University indications and regulations.
In the italian educational system university graduates (those who have passed the doctoraal exam) are eligible to pursue the country's highest academic degree, which is equivalent to the Anglo-Saxon PhD.
The preparation for this degree takes at least 3 years and is awarded following the public defence of a doctoral thesis; the thesis must be written and defended in english.

Master of Science (Master Scientifico Culturale-MSC)

During the first year, the candidate can get the Master of Science passing specific exams (4-5 courses) and presenting and defending a Master thesis: the thesis must be composed by an article submitted and published or accepted by a peer-review impact-factor journal.

Doctorate thesis

The doctorate thesis serves as a proof of the capability for independent scholarly/scientific pursuit. The formal requirements which must be met are listed in the appendix.
Please note that the thesis must be written in English, and a summary in italian, french and german.

Doctorate Committee

In consultation of the promoter, the Chair of the Doctorate submits a proposal to the Doctorate Board regarding the composition of the Doctorate Committee. This proposal must be made at least when the chair has been informed of the approval of the manuscript by the promoter.
The defence of the thesis can be planned not early than the third year of program.
Requirements related to the composition of the Doctorate Committee' are specified by the Doctorate regulation of University of Siena.

Approval of the doctorate thesis

If the manuscript is approved by the promoter, he or she gives copies to the members of the Doctorate Committee'.
Within six weeks after receiving it, they should decide whether the candidate should be permitted to defend the thesis.

Ceremonial of defence of the thesis

The candidate to the Doctorate will defend their thesis in front of the Doctorate Committee'. The defence of the thesis is regulated by University of Siena regulations.
The task of the Doctorate Committee' is twofold: it decides whether the candidate can be permitted to defend the thesis; after opposition and defence during the presentation ceremony it decides whether the doctor's degree can be conferred.
Experts selected by the chair of the Committee' can be part of the Committee during the defence of the thesis as guests.

The doctorate candidate must submit and have accepted and/or published at least 4 scientific articles in peer-review impact-factor journals.
The candidate must be first author of each articles and each article will act as single chapter of the thesis.
