SCIENTIFIC TECHNIQUES AND SKILLS
She
was trained in basic cell culture and molecular biology techniques such as DNA
and RNA preparation and manipulation, PCR, RT-PCR, DNA sequencing. Particularly
her experience is related to development and optimization of different PCR
protocols for (i) high-sensitivity detection of nucleic acids, (ii) competitive
quantitation of DNA and RNA, (iii) detection of mutations by direct sequencing
of PCR products. She has basic knowledge of several programs for writing,
graphics, statistics (Word, Excel, Sigmagel, Powerpoint, Sigmastat), DNA
analysis (Phylip Package) and she routinely accesses scientific www servers (Medline,
GenBank, DNA analysis).

Since
her student years Giulietta Venturi joined the Research group directed by Prof.
P. E. Valensin at the Section of Microbiology of the Department of Molecular
Biology of the University of Siena.

Basic training in molecular diagnosis in clinical microbiology.

1995-present.
Involved in research projects concerning molecular diagnosis of viral infections
and molecular monitoring of HIV-1 infection. Particularly, development of
protocols for routine
quantification of HIV-1 RNA in plasma and HIV-1 DNA in peripheral blood
mononuclear cells as measures of viral load, detection of HIV pol
gene mutations for monitoring of resistance to reverse transcriptase and
protease inhibitors, and detection of HIV mRNAs. Design and accomplishment of
selected population studies aimed at defining the prognostic value and clinical
utility of molecular markers in the clinical management of HIV-infected
individuals.
November
1999. She
obtains a grant from the University of Siena ('Young Researchers Program') for
the research project " HIV-1 non-B subtypes in Tuscany: prevalence, response to treatment and
updating of the procedures for virologic monitoring of the infection ".
Present.
Involved
in the development of a recombinant virus assay for phenotypic evaluation of
viral resistance to reverse
transcriptase and protease inhibitors.
