Curing diabetes with human pancreatic stem cells

A group of researchers of the University of Siena, coordinated by professor Vincenzo Sorrentino, have identified stem cells in the human pancreas that could be used to cure diabetes. The scientists, whose work has been published in Cell Death and Differentiation, have managed to demonstrate that it is possible to isolate a cell population that can be grown in laboratories from the pancreatic islets of adult humans: these cells can differentiate into various types of cells, including adipose cells, bone cells and cartilage. The main discovery of professor Sorrentino’s team is the ability of such differentiated cells to produce insulin, following modification in the laboratory.
